Boys Varsity Wrestling · Boys Wrestling 2020-2021 Season Recap

Despite dealing with Covid-19 and the restrictions placed on the boys wrestling team this year they still did very well and have had a great season. Next year is looking to be one of the best.

The boys wrestling team won their matches January 2 and 7 against Indian Lake and Pickerington Central, but they lost against Mason. While the team as a whole did well there were some who did exceptionally well on their own. Dylan Dempsey won all of the matches he had this weekend making him undefeated this season. This was a great start to the season for the Boys wrestling team.

On January 23, 2021 the boys wrestling team went up against Upper Arlington in their last match at an away game. This Neer’s wrestling team could not hold up against Upper Arlington and sadly lost the match. A few of the wrestlers did quite well in their matches, Geoffrey Kaminski won his matches along with a few others, Keagan Knapp, Zach Miller, and Conner Svanter also did well. Dylan Dempsy also won his matches, this has been an exceptional wrestling season for him so far.

The Boys Wrestling team played in their match against Liberty on February 4, 2021. This match did not go very well for the boys and they did not win the match and there were very few wins. Ben Tong and Dylan Dempsy won their matches. So far Dylan Dempsy has had an exceptional season and is the star of the boys wrestling program.

The upperclassman of the boys wrestling team have made a huge impact for everyone. Some faces like Keegan Knapp and Dylan Dempsey have lead the team to a very successful regular season , some of our pioneers qualified for the sectional tournament at Upper Arlington. When asked about how he thinks the season went Coach Tressler said, “It was a fairly productive season we were able to get a large amount of matches in even though we had to deal with COVID protocols.”

The wrestlers who qualified for the Sectionals at Upper Arlington did very well and as a team the boys got second place. As a team Orange got 223.5 points just behind Upper Arlington who got 241.0 points. Geoffrey Kaminski and Keegan Knapp both placed first in their weight classes doing very well. “1st Place Match – Keegan Knapp (Olen. Orange) 24-5 won by forfeit over Chris Karr Jr. (Reynoldsburg) 8-1 (For.).” “1st Place Match – Geoffrey Kaminski (Olen. Orange) 20-7 won by fall over Abel Garantche (Central Crossing) 29-7 (Fall 2:18).” Ben Tong, Zack Miller, Connor Svantner, and Dylan Dempsey all placed 2nd in their respective weight classes.

A few of the boys wrestled in the district tournament at Hilliard Darby on March 7, the team as a whole got 8th with 73 points and a few of the wrestlers qualified for states. The junior Keegan Knap won district title for the 160 weight class and got himself a spot in the state tournament. Zack Miller, Connor Svantner, and Dylan Dempsey all placed 5th in their weight classes earning themselves a state alternate spot.

In the state tournament on March 13th and 14th Keegan Knapp was our only Orange Pioneer competing. He got 7th place in the 160 weight class. This has been an exceptional season for the boys wrestling team and next year is looking to be a great one. “Hopefully we will be back to competing at tournaments and that will enable us to compete more,” said Tressler about the upcoming season.
