On December 22, the Pioneer basketball team beat Dublin Jerome 77-54 led by Andre Irvin Jr’s 26 points, Jason Foster added 14. They followed it up with a tight win against OCC Central division opponent Upper Arlington 45-43. Then the Pioneers hit a bit of a losing skid dropping two games in a row to Westerville Central and Hilliard Bradley. But on January 9, Andre Irvin Jr, and Mikey McColum put an end to that. With a huge win against St. Francis Desales 89-64. Irvin had 25 and McColum had 16. The Pioneers are going to look to keep that offense flowing this week against Dublin Coffman and Olentangy Liberty.

On January 8, the girls basketball team played against Hilliard Bradley. The girls had many opportunities, but it wasn’t enough to win. Bradley won 60-37.
On January 9, the girls travelled to Marysville to play the Monarchs. The game was competitive, as the Pioneers kept the score close, but missed opportunities by the offense gave the Monarchs the win, 50-34.
The girls look to rebuild and find a conference win next week against Coffman and Liberty.

Swim and Dive:
The Swim team had two swim meets over break, and both were at the Mount Carmel Fitness Center on 23. There was no diving. In the first meet on Dec. 27, the Pioneers swam against Olentangy Berlin. Both the boys and girls teams beat Berlin. Then on Jan. 2, it was Senior day against Olentangy. Where the Pioneers added a win on the boys side but a loss on the girls.
On Saturday the 9, the team competed against Westerville South at the Westerville Community Center. The girls team won both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relays. Emma Logan won the 200 freestyle, Alex Knodel won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke Elise Robinson won the 50 freestyle, Brooke Farren won the 100 fly, Ava Row the 100 freestyle.. On the boys side they won all three relays events, Graham Weidenhamer won the 200 free and, 100 breaststroke, Brady Farren won the 50 freestyle and 100 fly, Tuckor Lambert won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Ben Reussser won the 500 freestyle. Lots of wins for the Pioneers, and with so much uncertainty on the end of the season the fun has only begun.

Over winter break, the boys were off to recoup and regroup, taking a well deserved break to rest. Starting back up on Jan. 3 the Pioneers went head to head against inner-district rival Olentangy Liberty. After a close two periods and a lot of back and forth play, the boys defeated the Patriots 6-3 in a thrilling third period. Diehr in net along with goal scorers Knupp, G. Headlee, Hauer, and E. Muth led the team to victory. On Jan. 4, the Pioneers were back against Dublin Jerome for an important league game. During the first 40 minutes, the Pioneers were down two nothing from the Celtics. In the last 20 the boys came back with four goals including an empty netter from E. Muth, winning the game 4-2. On Jan. 10 hockey traveled to St. Xavier. After a quiet offensive start with Mercer in goal blocking every shot from St. Xavier, the boys were able to draw multiple penalties and drive up the score. Captain Austin Knupp and Max Hart both put two in the back of the net, leading the Pioneers to a huge 6-2 victory.

The boys kicked off the season on Jan. 6 against the Berlin Bears. The final score was 1879 – 2065. Nick Kicas led the team with a match high of 213 and 153 with a series of 366. The following day, the boys faced the Olentangy Braves and left the match with another rivalry win. Kickass had another good match with a game of 226 and 162 for a series of 388. Jake Burre and Marcus Turner also had notable matches, Burre with a series of 396 and Turner with a series of 439. The final result of the match was 1838 – 2207.
The girls kicked off the season against the Berlin Bears as well, unfortunately the Bears came out on top in a tight match. Lauryn Deck finished with a game of 199 and 157 with a series of 356. Lauren Berend had a series of 263, Eve Wicks had a series of 344. Senior Sidney Brisson had a series of 251. The final score of the match was 1602 – 1640.
The girls faced the Olentangy Braves on Jan. 7. Deck had games of 149 and 157 with a high series of 306. Berend had games of 131 and 157 for a series of 289. Wicks had a series of 303. They finished with a loss against the Braves finishing at 1533 – 2012.

The gymnastics team had back-to-back meets last week on Monday, January 4th and Tuesday, January 5th. The first meet was a five-team meet as Orange faced off against Hilliard Darby and three others, and the second was a dual meet against Westerville Central. Although spectators are still not allowed, they will continue to practice as they prepare for their next meet against Dublins on Saturday, January 16th at Gym-X.

The boys wrestling team won their matches against Indian Lake and Pickerington Central, but they lost against Mason. While the team as a whole did well there were some who did exceptionally well on their own. Dylan Dempsey won all of the matches he had this weekend making him undefeated this season. This is a great start to the season so far and the Boys wrestling team is looking forward to a great and successful season.
On January 10, the girls finished in first place 3-0 with wins over Lutheran West (60-18), Mason (51-30), and Marysville (42-39). Emily Duval, Alyla Castin, Taryn Martin, and Talia Mitchell all go 3-0 in matches.
