The boys and girls bowling teams had a long, but good 2019 season. To kick it off, they competed in the first round of the Holiday Baker Marathon Tournament but did not advance to the second round. Right after, the Pioneers hosted the fourth annual Pioneer Baker Bash at Palace Lanes. The boys team placed 6th with an overall score of 2964 points, with the girls placing 10th with a score of 2222. On Tuesday, Dec. 18, both the girls and boys teams played Grandview Heights at Sawmill Lanes.The boys won with a score of 2013-1758 and the girls followed up by beating the lady Bobcats by a score of 1691-1688.
Over winter break on Jan. 5, both teams participated in the Buckeye High School Classic. The boys placed 15th out of 26 teams with an overall score of 3709 points, while the girls placed 18th out of 24 teams with an overall score of 2840 points. Mckenzie Peterson scored the most individual points for Orange with a score of 472, allowing her to place 25th out of 133 competitors.
On Monday, Jan. 7, both varsity teams competed against Westerville North at Palace Lanes. The boys varsity team was able to get a win over the Warriors with a score of 2036-1381. Unfortunately, the Lady Pioneers lost 1836-1617. The next day, on Tuesday, Jan. 8, both Bowling teams played for a second night in a row against Marysville. Girls Varsity was able to come home with a 1778-1332 win. Mckenzie Peterson lead the team with a match and team high series of 363. However, boys varsity lost to Marysville 1987-2080.
On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the Girls and Boys Varsity Teams went up against sister school Olentangy Berlin and came home undefeated. Boys Varsity won 2245-1887 with a team high series of 397 by Jake Norz. Girls Varsity won 1731-1680 with a team high series of 347 by Raymie Shields.On Thursday, Jan. 24, Boys Varsity pulled a big win against Olentangy Liberty with a score of 1901-1850. Girls Varsity also was able to get an important win against Olentangy Liberty with a score of 1635-1335.
On Saturday, Jan. 26 both the boys and girls competed in the Jaguar Baker Marathon Tournament. The boys team finished 17th out of 24 teams averaging 162 points for a total of 2593. The girls team finished 9th out of 21 teams averaging 145 points for a total of 2327. On Tuesday, Feb. 19 the Olentangy Orange bowling teams also participated in a big Quad Match against sister schools Olentangy, Olentangy Liberty, and Olentangy Berlin. With a score of 1919, Orange came in second behind Olentangy (2083), and placed above Liberty (1591), and Berlin (1558).
To begin the postseason, boys bowling competed in Sectionals on Feb. 22 and placed 16th out of 42 teams, allowing them to move onto Districts. The total team score was 3644 and Athlete of the Week Junior Tanner Davidson helped the team with a personal score of 534. “I was very excited to get the title of Athlete of the Week and to help my team,” said Davidson. After, girls bowling also kicked off the postseason and placed 15th out of 37 teams at sectionals, allowing them to move onto Districts as well. The total team score was 2940 with Junior Raymie Shields leading the team with a personal score of 493. On March 2nd, both teams competed in Districts, but were unable to move onto states as the top three teams as the boys placed 6th and the girls placed 9th.
Overall, both teams ended the regular season with a great record, an Athlete of the Week, and a successful postseason. Girls Coach Dominic Boysaw commented that he was looking forward to what next year had in store for them as they improved a lot this year.
